- "The future devours the present, and the present devours the future, and both things are devoured by the past."
- — Cogito-4
Cogito-4 is an Exo Warlock stationed on the Asteroid Belt. He was assigned by Ikora Rey to oversee mining operations by allied Cabal and Awoken and reaserch the local piramid ships and anomalies related to it[11] . He's a prolific arc user, refered to as the Master of Arc by his students. Cogito is paired with a ghost named Dun-dun.
Biography[edit]
Past life[edit]
In his first life, Cogito was a hydrology professor called Seweryn Dunin. At some point of his life he decided to study the oceans under the ice shell of Europa along with a group of reaserches and security, including the wife of his niece, Luda Swoboda. During his stay at the facitity his health began to deteriarate and he created an exo body for himself. Under unclear circumstances he've aquired a Darkness crux that he somehow used to preserve his memmories.[1]
During the attack of the Vex on the facitities he lost his leg and replaced it with that of dead Luda-12. Hit attempt of leaving Europa in a jumpship was unsuccesful, as he died after crashing the ship in the Asteroid Belt.
Young Light[edit]
- "You were drifting dead in space. You were pierced by a piece of metal. Through and through. You were dead."
- — Dun-dun[1]
Cogito's body was found by his ghost and a Titan called Kobzar-13 floating in the Asteroid Belt where he died.[1]
He spend the first years of his life in the Last City, working alongside Cryptarchs and aiding other guardians in keeping the walls secured. At the time his ghost would often avoid him and forbid him from leaving the city.[2]
Cogito eventually decided to become a Warlock and study under an old Warlock named Ryba until their dissaperence on the Reef teritory. Savathûn remarks later that Ryba was the only one who wanted to teach him and that otherwise he would probably become a Titan.[15]
The Great Disaster[edit]
This section is a stub. You can help Destinypedia by expanding it.
Cogito-4 mentions taking part in the Great Disaster, aiding the Vanguard operation as a technical support. [12]
The Battle of the Twilight Gap[edit]
Cogito takes part in the Battle of the Twilight Gap, planning out transport routes under a Titan called Rastel. When his outpost falls him and Rastel try to get to Lord Shaxx'es possition to deliver granades and a transmitter to him.[1]
Exploring the Solar System[edit]
At this point Cogito is seen exploring the entire Solar System. He makes a note on a vision he's experienced while on an asteroid nearby Saturn.[3]
At some point he and Dun-dun are caught by two unknown Dredgens while they were tracking them under Ikora's orders. The two barely manage to escape thanks to Dun killing both of them when Cogito was immobilized.[1]
Some time before the Taken War they are send by Ikora to spy on Cabal Golden Legion's mining operations on 801 Khors and Juno. Having discovered the prison complex of Lex Artenia Cogito decides to get himself smuggled there. He then pressumaby is rescued in operation under a codename "Rat Escape".[4]
The Red War[edit]
A few weeks before the Red War Cogito visits the Last City after a success of a short raid on a vex structure on a moon Io (dubbed Hand of Greed by his hunter teammates). He spends an evening at the Seven Stars and then at his apartment[6] which is later destroyed during Ghaul's attack on the Last City. When the Red War starts he returns to Earth but doesn't take part in the final battle (stays at the Farm).
After the war ends he returns to his camp near a piramid in the Asteroid Belt and notes some of his items missing. He writes to Ikora about being concerned with the pyramid emitting signals, guessing that it might be communicating with the rest of the fleet.[7]
Some time after that Cogito starts roaming the Asteroid Belt in search for his old teacher Ryba, after hearing a rumor of them being Taken and being stranded somewhere in the Tangled Shore. The exact events are unknown as Cogito seems to not remember them but acording to Savathûn he manages to free Ryba from the taken corruption, only for them to die, after which she alleges that Cogito flew into rage and decimated a part of the Shore[15]. After this event Cogito leaves to Nessus.
A visit to Europa[edit]
- Cogito-4:"Dun? What is it?"
- CDun-dun:"Cogito, that’s... that necklace, that... face... Cogito, that’s- this is... you?"
- — Cogito-4 and Dun-dun
Shortly after Eramis is defeated Cogito helps a ghost called Tebe get to Europa to search for a guardian. Dun-dun feels uneasy about the trip and his suspicions are confirmed when the two start experiencing flashbacks to their pasts. When they come to the room of the leader of the works that were performed in a facility they were scouting, they realize that Cogito is indeed the man whose room they are in. Sensing a dark presence, they flee the facility, alongside a guardian that Tebe resurected.[1]
The Northen Architect[edit]
- "Yeah, well. I've been doing it for a while now. Getting a window and an entrance was quite easy, once I've figured out how they decide what to build. Buuut..."
- — Cogito talking about his former outpost
The Nightmare of Ryba[edit]
While Cogito visits the Moon to help Eris he finds a nightmare of his dead mentor. The vision partially shows what happened when the Warlock first went looking for them after the Red War and dissolves, not being able to haunt him due to his memory loss.[5]
Manipulating the Vex[edit]
It's unclear how Cogito managed to partially manipulate the structures build by the Vex on Nessus but he've managed to make them build simple, hollow abodes.[14]
His work there comes to an end when Maya starts to influence the Vex and Cogito stops being able to predict their moves. He leaves Nessus and briefly goes into hiding after accidentally leaving Vanguard equpment to be destroyed by radiolaria.[12]
The Asteroid Belt[edit]
- Cogito-4:"So how is the extraction going?"
- Taş:"From our side, not bad. We finished processing that asteroid you told us to. Silicon levels came out according to the calculations but magnesium was off by several tons."
- — Cogito-4 and Taş[18]
After leaving Nessus with his scouts Cogito heads back to the Asteroid Belt. He establishes a base in an abandoned Eliksnii structure takes over builds a signal tower, tracking any signal from the piramid (nicknamed "Coffer"). Alongside his students he begins mapping the ship as well as monitor variour anomallies that surroud it.
Alongside the Reef and Cabal geologists he secures a supply chain of valuable minerals and industrial water for the Last City.
Personality and traits[edit]

- Ikora Rey:"You prioritized their safety."
- Cogito-4:"Of course I did- but I failed!"
- — Ikora and Cogito.[12]
He's a very liable guardian, often talking about being responsible for his scouts and students. It's possible that his care for other people might stem from trauma developed from never being able to save and protect people around him but could also be a trait he carried from his past life, considering that he was a leader of his expedition on Europa. He's quite friendly but can be distant, rarely talking openly abut his more complex emotions. However, he still likes to joke around, often encpuraged by his ghost who contrasts him by often being rude and judgemental.
He spend his young light days in the Last City, and he considers himself a pacifist, avoiding violence as much as he can. He's also quite religious, believing in Traveler since his youth[13]. Savathûn talks about his unshakable sense of morality[15] and he, himself, remains against direct use of the Darkness by guardians.
He has a very good and close relationship with Dun-dun, being the only person the ghost is affectionate with.
